Bio

Steve Spade was born in Limerick, Ireland, and has quickly established himself as a firm favourite on the Irish celebrity circuit. He combines top-drawer sleight of hand skills with psychological subtleties and great comic timing. His daring escapes – being burnt at the stake, or escaping from a sealed box underwater – have garnered national headlines as “Ireland’s Answer to Houdini.” (The Irish Times) Steve has been doing magic since his childhood, performing at every opportunity on the streets and in the pubs and clubs of his native city. He also worked the kids’s party circuit, honing his skills in front of the toughest audience of them all!

Steve has been heavily influenced by the masters of the past, including Harry Houdini. His Houdini tribute show Beyond Magic packed the City Limits Comedy Club in Cork in the summer of 2011, as well as playing the college circuit. He followed that success with a stunt Houdini would have been proud of – he was sealed in a wooden crate and dropped into the River Shannon in front of over 2,000 people. He escaped safely.

This led to a regular slot on The Daily Show(RTE 1) in the spring of 2012. Steve has also appeared on TV3’s Come Dine With Me.

For Steve the intimate miracle of close-up magic is at the heart of his art. He has wowed many celebrities, including Mike Tyson, Rhianna, and Kevin Spacey. No after-show party is complete without his manipulations – just ask Florence & The Machine, Calvin Harris, Metallica, The Coronas, Bressie, Glen Hansard, and many more. He stunned 10,000 people with his illusions at The Electric Picnic.

After watching him perform actor Kevin Spacey just scratched his head, and asked: “Can I have my watch back?” Luckily Steve only picks pockets for entertainment purposes!

Although magic was his first love, Steve’s impish sense of humour has made him a firm favourite on the comedy circuit. He has shared the stage with Pat Shortt, Tommy Tiernan, Jason Byrne, PJ Gallagher, Colin Murphy, David McSavage, Neil Delmere, the Rubber Bandits, and Des Bishop.

His most recent stunt saw him being burnt at the stake in the haunting courtyard of King John’s Castle, Limerick. Although several hundred people saw his body go up in flames, he reappeared on the ramparts of the castle unharmed just moments later. That made the magic world stand up and pay attention. It also brought Steveto the attention of the Discovery Channel, who were looking for an expert to appraise a pair of handcuffs once owned by Houdini.

Not only did Steve appraise the handcuffs, he won them off the show’s producers, by beating Houdini’s personal record for his signature 100 foot rope escape. Millions of television viewers worldwide saw the daring young escape artist beat the record of his hero.

Ideally, Steve begins during the champagne reception performing strolling magic, entertaining guests as they arrive. To keep the atmosphere going during the meal, Steve can move from table to table in between courses providing intimate, top-class magic presented in a friendly, relaxed manner.

Steve is available for Wedding Entertainment throughout Ireland and will ensure your special day is not only memorable but also truly magical for your guests. Usual runtime is 2 – 3 hours depending on the number of guests.
